Choosing the Right Cobblestone for Your Project

Choosing the Right Cobblestone for Your Project

"Beige slate cobblestone" is a category, not a uniform product. To ensure success, you must specify the correct grade, size, and thickness for your application. Here is our technical breakdown.

Standard Grading Categories:

Premium / Pattern Grade: Carefully selected for consistent thickness (±5mm) and uniform sizing. Essential for formal patterns (herringbone, fan) where alignment is key. Slight color variation.

Standard / Landscape Grade: Offers a natural blend of sizes and shapes within a defined range (e.g., 100-150mm). Moderate thickness variation. Ideal for rustic pathways, dry-stack walls, and informal courtyards where an organic look is desired.

Rustic / Field Grade: The most varied in size, shape, and thickness. Delivers maximum authentic, "old-world" character. Best for restoration projects, edging, and highly naturalistic landscapes.

Key Size Classifications:

Settes: Small cubes, typically under 100mm in face dimension. Used for detailed work, borders, and high-precision patterns.

Cobbles: The classic size, ranging from 100mm to 150mm. The workhorse for most paving applications.

Pitchers / Large Cobbles: Over 150mm, often irregularly shaped. Used for bold statements,large-scale paving, and landscape features.

Critical Technical Specs to Request:

  1. Absorption Rate: Should be <0.4% for frost-resistant slate.

  2. Density: >2.6 g/cm³ indicates a durable, dense stone.

  3. Abrasion Resistance: Important for high-traffic areas.

  4. Slip Resistance (Wet): Specify a flamed or riven (split) surface for wet areas; a honed surface will be slippery.
