A common myth is that stone walls are high-maintenance. The truth? High-quality cultural stone, when properly installed and sealed, is incredibly resilient and easy to care for. Let’s debunk the myths and outline simple, effective maintenance.

Myth 1: “It Stains Easily Like Porous Natural Stone.”
Fact: While unsealed cultural stone can be porous, the solution is simple. A quality penetrating sealer should be applied after installation (and every 3-5 years thereafter). This sealer creates an invisible barrier that repels water, oil, and stains, making most spills easy to wipe away.
Myth 2: “It’s Fragile and Will Crack or Fall Off.”
Fact: When installed correctly with the proper mortar/adhesive on a sound substrate, cultural stone is very durable. The bond is extremely strong. Impacts severe enough to damage it would also damage drywall or plaster.
Myth 3: “It’s Impossible to Clean.”
Fact: Routine cleaning is simple. For interior walls, dust periodically with a soft brush or vacuum with a brush attachment. For light soil, use a pH-neutral stone cleaner and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon) or abrasive pads.
Exterior walls generally just need an annual rinse with a garden hose. For algae or mildew in damp climates, use a mild bleach solution (10:1 water/bleach) and gentle scrubbing, followed by a thorough rinse.
The Essential Care Routine
Seal It: The single most important step for interior kitchens/baths and all exterior applications.
Dust & Rinse: Regular, gentle cleaning prevents buildup.
Address Stains Promptly: Blot liquids; use a poultice for stubborn oil-based stains.
Inspect Joints: Periodically check the mortar joints for cracks, especially outdoors. Repoint with matching mortar if needed.
What NOT to Do
Do not use harsh chemical cleaners, wire brushes, or pressure washers (which can erode mortar and damage the stone surface).
Do not apply wax or topical coatings not designed for stone.
